Observation of Events

Total Solar Eclipse in 1995
When India experienced Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) in 1995, Breakthrough launched a campaign throughout the country to enlighten the people about the scientific aspects of this wonderful event and to eradicate superstitions associated with it. We arranged observation centres along the totality belt where thousands of people witnessed the event using filters supplied by us.

Transit of Venus in 2004, June 8
The Transit of Venus, a rare celestial event occurred in 2004 June. Anticipating the event Breakthrough produced thousands of safe sun filters by importing black polymer film from U.S.A. On the day of the event people all over the country observed it from centres arranged by breakthrough. In addition to that, people witnessed this event through the sun filters distributed by us in various educational institutions and localities.

 125th Birth anniversary of Albert Einstein and
100th anniversary of theory of Relativity
Last year was the 100th anniversary of The Theory of Relativity, the epoch making discovery of one of the greatest scientist of our era, Albert Einstein. At the call of U.N.O and the international physics community, it was decided to observe the year 2005 as International Year Physics. Echoing this call, a committee was formed at the initiative of Breakthrough Science Society to observe International Year of Physics.
At the call of Breakthrough All India committee, World Year of physics was observed in different states. Through the previous 4 issues of Breakthrough journal we highlighted the contributions of Albert Einstein to the body of human knowledge and our perception about the Universe. Observing this year, Seminar, symposia, workshop etc were organised in different states to highlight Einstein’s contributions both theoretical and philosophical.

BSS Activities in Kerala

Breakthrough Science Society activities in Kerala commenced in the year 2000.  We could give shape to an organized and coordinated work only after the formal constitution of the State Chapter, in 2002.

Observing Transit of Venus

The Transit of Venus, one of the rare celestial phenomena happened in June 8, 2004. Knowing these phenomena much early, BSS Kerala chapter took the initiative in organizing classes Talks etc were conducted in various parts of the state. Hundreds of schools, colleges and other educational institutions were covered and was explained to the students and teachers the significance of this event. Safe sun filters supplied by Breakthrough All India Committee were distributed in schools and colleges in the state.

In Trivandrum, in association with the public library a class on Transit of Venus was conducted where people from all walks of life participated. Sun filters were distributed there. Dr.P.S.Babu, Breakthrough Executive committee member took the class. On the day of TOV, an observation centre was opened in front of the secretariat to view this event. Thousands of people witnessed this celestial event through the filters provided by BSS volunteers.

Observance of International Year of Physics in Kerala

        The two year long state-level Einstein year observation programme in Kerala was inaugurated by Dr. Soumitro Banerjee, General Secretary, Breakthrough Science Society, at Y.M.C.A Hall, Trivandrum on 19th November, 2004 with a talk on “Albert Einstein and Method of Science”. Sri.G.S.Padmakumar, State Coordinator of Breakthrough Science Society Presided over the function in which, Sri.D.Krishna Warrier, Dy.Director, C-DAC, Mr. Francis Kalathunkal and Mr. Benny Joseph also spoke.Sri.C.K.Lukose released the book on Einstein by giving the first copy to Dr.K.G.Thara, Faculty Member, Institute of Land Management.

               Breakthrough Science Society, Kerala Chapter has taken up the task to publish a book on Einstein and Theory of Relativity, in Malayalam that have already gone through two editions. “Einstein Souvenir” published by us also was well received. “Einstein Exhibition”, a photo- poster exhibition on the life and work of Einstein, and a documentary “Albert Einstein -the Philosopher Scientist”, both prepared by Breakthrough, Kerala Chapter were being exhibited in various schools and colleges throughout the state and it is still continuing.  As a continuation these programmes, science clubs are formed in different institutions and localities.

               To co-ordinate the celebration of the World Year of Physics, a Committee organized by the Breakthrough was constituted in October 2004 with M.V.Paylee, Former Vice-Chancellor, Cochin University (Who had met Dr.Einstein personally in 1953) as patron, Dr.K.Babu Joseph –Former Vice-Chancellor, CUSAT, as president, Francis Kalathunkal as convener. An exhibition of photographs and posters on the life and works of Einstein had been inaugurated through a State Level programme on 14th January 2005 at the Maharajas College Auditorium, Ernakulam     

Workshop on Theory of Relativity and Philosophy:  Under the auspices of the Kerala State Chapter of Breakthrough, a one-day workshop on Theory of Relativity and Philosophy was held at Ernakulam on 22.10.2004. Dr.Soumitro Banerjee led the workshop which was attended by B.S.S activists from different districts of the state.

February 4-5, 2006, State level science camp: A two-day camp on science and philosophy was organized by the state chapter of BSS at Kraistavashramom, Kottayam.                             Sri. C. Ramachandran, Rtd. scientist, ISRO, inaugurated the camp. Dr.T.U.Mathai (President, Kottayam Town Breakthrough Science Club) and Prof. Gopalakrishna Panicker (NSS Hindu College Changanacherry) felicitated. State coordinator G.S.Padmakumar welcomed the gathering and Prof. P.N.Thankachan, district co-ordinator, BSS, proposed the vote of thanks.

In the afternoon of 4th Feb., group discussion on “what we need is a new science movement” was held. K. P. Saji (Kannur), Dr. P. S. Babu (Thrissur), Francis K. (Ernakulam), P. P. Rajeevan (Pathanamthitta), Dr.Hariprasad (Idukki) and Benny Joseph (Thiruvananthapuram) conducted the discussions. In the panel discussion on Science and Philosophy, Dr. K. P. Satheesh (Government College, Kottayam), Dr. Moncy V. John (St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry), C. Ramachandran and Dr. K. G. Nair (Director, C-SiS) participated.

On the second day, 5th Feb., Dr. Soumitro Banerjee, General Secretary, BSS, opened the discussion on Science and Philosophy. P. Radhakrishnan (Retd. Dy. Director, LPSC, VSSC), Dr. T. U. Mathai, C. Ramachandran and Prof. Gopalakrishna Panicker participated in the panel discussion, which was followed by a group discussion. Dr. Soumitro Banerjee concluded the session answering the questions raised in the group discussions.

Dr. M. S. Umesh (President, Pathanamthitta Chapter of BSS) presided over the valedictory function. Dr. Soumitro Banerjee delivered the keynote address. Dr. T. U. Mathai, Prof. Gopala-Krishna Panicker, C. Ramachandran and Dr. Sathyanadhan, CUSAT, felicitated. P. G. Sasikumar welcomed the gathering and state co-ordinator G. S. Padmakumar delivered the vote of thanks.

District wise programmes:

Ernakulam District

               On behalf of Ernakulam District Chapter of BSS, a talk by Soumitro Banerjee on “Einstein and Method of Science” was held on 25th October at Achutha Menon Hall, Ernakulam. Dr.Babu Joseph, former VC of CUSAT was the Chief Guest of the programme. Mr.G.S.Padmakumar presided. Among the speakers were Sri.A.D.Krishnan Asan, Secretary, Ernakulam Public Library, Francis Kalathunkal, P.P.Abraham and K.S.Harikumar. Sri.Sathyanathan, CUSAT and Prof.P.N.Thankachan were present.

5 April,2005: Einstein Exhibition jointly organized by Centre for Science in Society-CUSAT and Breakthrough. Inaugurated by Emeritus Professor Dr.M.V.Pailee, Dr.P.K.Abdul Azis, Vice-Chancellor, CUSAT, Dr.K.Gopalan, Former V.C, CUSAT, Dr.K.G.Nair, Director, C-SIS and Mr.Francis Kalathunkal spoke. Dr.K.Babu Joseph (Former V.C, CUSAT) delivered the Einstein memorial talk.

18 April: RADIO TALK on the occasion of the 50th death anniversary of Albert Einstein. “My meeting with Einstein” by Dr.M.V.Pailee and “Albert Einstein-Life and contributions” by Sri.G.S.Padmakumar (Breakthrough State Convener), broad casted by Cochin F.M Station.

25 June: Einstein Exhibition organized jointly by BODHI and Breakthrough at S.N.M.H.S.S, Moothakunnam. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.N.Shaji (Department of Physics, Govt.Polytechnic, Cochin)

25 July: Einstein Exhibition organized jointly by S.S.M.H School, S.S.M.T.T.I and Breakthrough. Inaugurated by Prof.Kesavan Vellikulangara

31 July: Kodungalloor, Talk by Francis Kalathunkal on “Life & Work of Albert Einstein” at the Anniversary programme of Bala Sahithya Vedi. Prof.Kesavan Vellikulangara presided.

1 August: Einstein Exhibition organized jointly by MES Public School, Kodungalloor and BSS. Inaugurated by Dr.A.Inasu (Pro-Vice Chancellor, CUSAT). Dr.E.J.John, Dr.A.A.Navas and Francis Kalathunkal spoke.

23 August: Kendriya Vidyalaya 1&11, Naval Base Cochin and BSS Jointly organized the Einstein Exhibition. Inaugurated by Dr.Godfrey Louis (Reader, School of Pure and Applied Physics, M.G.University, Kottayam). Commodore V.R.Nathan V.S.M presided. Mr.Kuriakose Varkey, Mr.C.Chakappan and Mr.Francis Kalathunkal spoke.

30 August Einstein Exhibition jointly organized by Breakthrough and Dept. of Physics, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam. Inaugurated by Dr.Jacob Philip, Director, STIC-CUSAT. Talk on “Einstein: The architect of Modern Physics” by Dr.K.Babu Joseph. Dr.Annie Valamattom (HOD, Physics) and Mr.Francis Kalathunkal spoke. Dr.Jacob Philip delivered a talk on “Bose-Einstein Condensation.”

February 13-14:,2006 Einstein Exhibition, at Town Hall, Muvattupuzha organized under the joint auspices of BSS, Department of Education and Muvattupuzha Municipal Council. Inaugurated by Sri. C. Ramachandran, retired scientist, ISRO.

February 28, National Science Day: Dr. P. S. Babu delivered a talk on Einstein and Method of Science at St. Ann's High School, Kottappuram. Einstein Exhibition was organized at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha.

March 10, 2006: Talk on “Life and Work of Albert Einstein and Theory of Relativity- Special and General” By Dr. N. Shaji (Govt. College, Manimalakkunnu) at PWD Rest House Hall, Tripunithura. Francis Kalathunkal delivered a talk on Einstein's life.

An Einstein Year Observance Committee was formed with Dr. B. Sathyanadhan (CUSAT), Prof. Kuriakose (St. Peter's College, Kolenchery), Prof. Venugopal (D.B.College, Thalayolapparambu) as advisors, K. S. Harikumar as President, Sajeev kumar. P. P. as Secretary and Sreejith as Joint Secretary.

Kollam District

8 July St.Johns College Anchal: Einstein Exhibition on behalf of Breakthrough and Dept. of Physics on the occasion of Physics Day celebration of the college. Inaugurated by the college principal Rev.Fr.Samuel Kattukallil. Talks on “The Life and Philosophy of Einstein” by              Dr. P.S.Babu and Theory of Relativity and Philosophy by Dr.Sreeraj were held. The Head of the Physics Dept. Prof. Benny George also spoke.

               In February 10, 2005 Einstein Exhibition was organized jointly by Breakthrough Science Society and Dept.of Physics Kerala University. Prof.Dr.V.K.Vaidyan, Head of the Department, Physics, inaugurated the Exhibition. Benny Joseph district co-ordinator, Breakthrough Science Society also spoke. Apart from the physics department, students from other departments also came and watched the exhibition. Students from near by schools also watched the exhibition

1st July: St.Rock’s School, Valiyathura: Einstein Exhibition was inaugurated by School H.M. Benny Joseph, District coordinator, Breakthrough, also spoke. Over 1500 students saw the exhibition.

2 July: St.Philomina, Poonthura: Over 1000 students saw the exhibition. Benny Joseph and P.S.Gopakumar spoke.

26 July: Govt.Higher Secondary School, Kazhakkottam: The School Headmistress inaugurated the exhibition. Over 1200 students saw the exhibition.

27 July: Pallithura Higher Secondary School: The principal inaugurated the exhibition. Benny Joseph also to the assembly 1500 students saw the exhibition. A science quiz competition was also conducted.

9August:Govt.H.S.S. Kulathoor: The Principal inaugurated the exhibition. Science Teacher Ms.Sudha presided. Over 1000 students saw the exhibition.

 14 October: Exhibition and Documentary on Einstein has been conducted in St.Antony’s Higher Secondary School, Valiyathura. School principal A.Lilly Peter inaugurated the exhibition; The meeting was presided over by Tony Oliver, PTA president. Benny Joseph, District Coordinatior, Breakthrough Science Society was also present. Over 1500 students saw the exhibition and watched the documentary on Einstein with great enthusiasm Gopakumar, Harikrishnan, Anilkumar, Asokan all district chapter members of Breakthrough Science Society participated.

27-28 October: Two day long exhibition had been conducted at University College in Association with department. Prof.Girija, the princiapal formally inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.Mohan, Head of the Dept., Physics, presided over. Benny Joseph also spoke. Students from various schools and Colleges attended the exhibition with keen interest. Breakthrough District Chapter members Jyothis Babu, Anilkumar and Novin participated.

25 Nov. Einstein Exhibition was conducted at St.Thomas Residential School, Mukkola.

14 December: Einstein Exhibition was conducted at St.Xaviers College, Thumba. P.Radhakrishnan, Rtd, Deputy Director, inaugurated the exhibition.Prof.T.M.George, Principal, presided over. Prof.P.S.Elsi, Head of the Department, physics welcomed all. Breakthrough district co-ordinator Benny Joseph also spoke. Breakthrough district chapter members Asharaj, Arun, Harikrishnan also participated.

12-14 January: Breakthrough Science Society participated in a three-day long science fair organized by Ariyanad Govt.Higher Secondary School. Einstein Photo-poster Exhibition and documentary presentation on Einstein and Madame Curie were shown. Students, Teachers from various schools and public at large viewed it and appreciated.

Kottayam District

               On behalf of Einstein Year observance committee, Kottayam District, a talk by Soumitro Banerjee on The Life and contributions of Einstein was held on 21st October, 2004 at the Vyapara Bhavan, Kottayam. The programme was presided by Dr.L.Godfrey, (Reader, Dept. of Physics, MG.University.) Dr.K.P.Satheesh, (Govt.College, Kottayam), Dr.N.V.Unnikrishnan (Reader, Reader, Dept. of Physics, M.G.University) and Prof.P.N.Thankachan (Asst.Prof, Dept. of Electronics and Communication, RIT) spoke.

20 April: Einstein Exhibition was organized at the physics Dept. of the M.G.University. Dr.C.S.Menon, Director, School of Pure and Applied Physics, inaugurated the exhibition. Dr.Rajan Gurukkal, a noted historian, delivered the keynote address. Dr.L.Godfrey, Prof.P.N.Thankachan and Krishnakumar also spoke.

28 July: Madam Curie memorial meeting was organized at Trade Centre Hall, Kottayam. Dr. L.Godfrey, Reader, School of Pure and Applied Physics, MG University, Kottayam presided over the function. Dr.P.S.Babu from Madame Curie Medical and Educational Trust was the main speaker. G.S.Padmakumar, Prof.P.N.Thakachan and Mr.Arunjith also spoke.

5 October: Einstein Exhibition at St.Dominic College Kanjirappally. Principal Prof.T.T.Jose inaugurated the exhibition. Dr.Suresh Vettor and T.Arunjith spoke.

7 October: Einstein Exhibition at CMS, College, Kottayam. Principal Prof.Korula Isaac inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.P.K.Annamma Dr.P.Rajagopal and Prof.P.N.Thankachan spoke.

28 October: Einstein Exhibition at Alphonsa College Pala. Principal of the college inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.Mariamma and T.Arunjith spoke.

8-9 November: Einstein Exhibition at N.S.S College, Changanacherry.NSS Educational Secretary, Prof.R.Prasannakumar inaugurated the Exhibition. Principal Prof.Kesava Chandra presided. Dr.K.P.Satheesh, Dr.Moncy.V.John, Dr.Unnikrishnan, Prof.Gopalakrishna Panikker and G.S.Padmakumar presented papers on various Subjects.

11November: Einstein Exhibition at St.Mary’s HSS Bharanganom, Pala. Principal inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.P.N.Thankachan took class on TOR.

15 November: Einstein Exhibition at Medical College, Kottayam. Principal Dr.Sudhayakumar inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.P.N.Thankachan delivered a lecture on Life and Contributions of Einstein. Video on Albert Einstein- the philosopher scientist was shown.

17 November: Einstein Exhibition at St.Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor, Pala. Principal inaugurated the exhibition.

18 November: Talk on “Coherence-the nature of Light”, Nobel Prize winning subject for Physics2005, by Dr.V.P.N.Namboothiri at C.M.S.College, Kottayam. Principal Prof.Korula Isaac presided. A Documentary film show on Einstein.

29 November: Talk by Dr.Bala Iyer from Raman Research Institute, Bangalore at Great Hall, CMS College, Kottayam. In his 3-hour long lecture Prof.Bala Iyer dealt extensively on STR and GTR. People from different walks of life attended the lecture. It was a memorable experience for the science loving people of Kerala. Principal Prof. Korula Isaac presided. Dr.L.Godfrey, Prof.Annnamma, G.S.Padmakumar and Prof.P.N.Thankachan also spoke.

30November: Talk by Dr. Bala Iyer at School of Pure and Applied Physics, MG University Kottayam on GTR to Gravitational wave detectors. Dr.C.S.Menon presided. Dr.L.Godfrey and Prof.P.N.Thankachan also spoke.

8 December: Einstein Exhibition at KG College, Pambady, Kottayam. BMM HSS Principal Jose Paikkad inaugurated the Exhibition. KG College principal Prof.Jacob Kurian Onat, Prof.Sunnykutty and Jaiby N Jacob also spoke.

9 December: Einstein Exhibition at BK College, Amalagiri, Kottayam. Principal inaugurated the Exhibition. Jaiby N Jacob also spoke.

5-7 January, 2006: Video show on Albert Einstein-the philosopher Scientist at St.John’s Baptist School at Nedunkunnam, Kottayam.The show was conducted as part of a science exhibition. K.R.Renjith conducted the show.

6-7January, 2006: Einstein Exhibition at Mallappally Institute for Academic Excellence Mallappally. Kallooppara MLA Abraham Puthussery inaugurated the exhibition. Hundred of students from various institutions watched the exhibition.

Einstein Exhibition at KE College, Mannanam, Kottayam: Principal Sri.Vigi inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.P.T.Kurian and Prof.P.N.Thankachan also spoke.

7January: Video show on Albert Einstein-the philosopher scientist at St.Thomas TTI, Pala. P.G.Sasikumar conducted the show.

14 January: Breakthrough Science Club formed at Kottayam town. Office bearers: President-Dr.T.U.Mathai, Vice-president-K.Thankappan, Secretary-P.G.Sasikumar, Joint Secretaries-Arun Mathew and Sreenivasan, Treasurer-Bini P.Johny and a sixteen member executive committee.

February 9, Sky watching programme at Kottayam: Breakthrough Science Club organized the programme with the co-operation of CMS College Kottayam. Amateur astronomer K. G. Thankappan and K. G. Biju led the programme.

May 8,9,10, Cosmology-Astronomy camp at Kottayam: A 3-day camp on Cosmology and Astronomy at KPS Menon hall, Kottayam. It was organised under the joint auspices of BSS Kottayam chapter, Kottayam Public Library and Jawahar Balbhavan. Dr. Babu Joseph, Former Vice Chancellor, Cochin University inaugurated the camp. President of Kottayam Public Library Abraham Itticheriya presided over. Dr. C. S. Menon (Director, SPAP, M.G. University), C. G. Viswanathan Nair, C. Ramachandran, Advocate Jose Philip and              Dr. L .Godfrey spoke. Prof. P. N. Thankachan gave the welcome address and T. Sasikumar, Secretary, Kottayam Public Library, delivered the vote of thanks. An interactive session was also arranged, in which Dr. K. Babu Joseph, Dr. C. S. Menon, Dr. L Godfrey, Dr. Moncy V. John and Prof. Gopalakrishna Panicker participated.

The first lecture was on Observational Astronomy by Dr. N. Shaji of Govt. College Koothattukulam. On 9th there were three lectures: the first on General Theory of Relativity and Cosmology by Dr. K. P. Satheesh, (Head of the Department of Physics, Government College Kottayam) and the second by Dr. Moncy V. John of St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry on recent developments in Cosmology, and the third by K. Thankappan who spoke “On sky watching”. Each session was followed by group discussion. Night sky watching with two 5 inch telescopes was also arranged.

On the last day there was a workshop on telescope making (conducted by K. G. Thankappan) and a lecture on eclipses by Prof. Gopalakrishna Panicker. Using a sun filter and telescope, sun-observation was also conducted.

The concluding session was presided over by Dr. T. U. Mathai. Abraham Itticheriya gave the certificates to the participants. Prof. Gopalakrishna Panicker, T. Sasikumar, C. Ramachandran, G. Mohanachandran and G. S. Padma-kumar felicitated. P. G. Sasikumar delivered the welcome notes and Prof. P. N. Thankachan delivered the vote of thanks.

               18 October, 2005: Einstein Exhibition at Sreekrishna Higher Secondary School, Guruvayoor.

19October: Einstein Exhibition at DIET, Thrissur. Principal Sri.Babu presided. Prof.Rani, principal, Govt.Engineering College, Thrissur inaugurated the exhibition. Prof.Janardhanan and G.S.Padmakumar spoke on life and contributions and Life and Philosophy of Albert Einstein respectively.

18 November: Einstein Exhibition at LF College Guruvayoor, Principal of the College presided over the inaugural function.Dr.P.S.Babu, member, executive committee of BSS, Kerala, also spoke about the life and philosophy of Einstein.

21November: Einstein Exhibition at Vivekodayam HSS, Thrissur. Principal, Sri.Rajagopal presided over the inaugural function. Prof.Govindankutty Menon, former HOD, Physics, Keralavarma College, Thrissur, delivered a talk on Einstein’s contributions. Dr.P.S.Babu spoke on Einstein’s life and philosophy.

12December: Einstein Exhibition at Maya College, Valappad. College principal Sri.Avaz presided over the inaugural function. Dr.P.S.Babu and P.A.Joshua spoke.

12January, 2006: Einstein Exhibition at St.Mary’s College, Thrissur.Deputy director of the collegiate Education, Major Vasudevan inaugurated the Exhibition. Sister Jesmi presided over the function. Prof.Govindankutty Menon and Dr.P.S.Babu spoke.

28 January, 2006: Workshop on Life and Work of Einstein, at Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Kodungallur. N. Bhat, Principal, GBHSS, inaugurated. Dr. Godfrey Louis, MG University, Kottayam, Prof. P. N. Thankachan and Francis Kalathunkal delivered the lectures. Prof. Kesavan Vellikkulangara was the main speaker in the concluding session. A documentary on Einstein was screened.

Pathanamthitta District

               The Breakthrough Unit of Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta cooperated with the Department of Physics of the college in organizing a national seminar on 20th October, 2004. In the opening session of the seminar Dr.Soumitro Banerjee spoke on the Life and work of Einstein. In another session he presented a popular talk on bifurcation theory. Dr.Moncy.V.John, Department of Physics, St.Thomas College, Ranni, Presented a paper on Quantum Mechanics. Dr.Umesh and Mr.P.P.Rajeevan, president and secretary respectively of Breakthrough, Pathanamthitta District Chapter and Faculty members from Catholicate College also spoke in the inaugural session.

18-19 August: Einstein Exhibition was held at the Pathanamthitta Town Hall. Dr.T.A.George, former Principal, Catholicate College, inaugurated. Dr.M.S.Umesh, President, Pathanamthitta District Chapter of BSS presided over the inaugural function. Advocate M.S.Madhu and Sri.George Mathew Kodumon also spoke. On 18 August evening G.S.Padmakumar delivered a talk on the life and philosophy of Einstein at exhibition venue. Jiju.V.Jacob, Vice-president of the district chapter presided.

19 August: A seminar on Science and Society was held. Dr.M.S.Umesh, Dr.Mocy.V.John and Dr.George Varghese Koppara participated in the discussions. Prof.P.N.Thankachan was the moderator. A documentary produced by BSS, Kerala State Chapter on the life and work of Einstein was shown both days.

6-7 September: Einstein Exhibition was held at the Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla, under the joint auspices of the department of Physics and BSS. Inaugurated by Most Rev.Dr.Philippose Mar Chrysostum, Mar Thoma Metropolitan. HOD, Physics Prof. John Varghese presided. Principal in charge of the college, Prof.Koshi Thomas, and Prof.Varghese Chacko (Former HOD, Physics) were felicitated. G.S.Padmakumar delivered the key note address. The convener of the programme, Dr.Samuel Mathew, welcomed the gathering and Prof.P.C.Thomas proposed vote of thanks. On 7 September Prof.P.N.Thankachan delivered a talk on Albert Einstein and the Theory of Relativity.

Kozhikkodu District

               27 July: Z.G.College, Calicut, Department of Physics organized a seminar and Einstein Exhibition. The Principal of the college, Dr. P.Rajagopalan inaugurated the programme. Dr.M.Jothyraj, district in charge of BSS delivered a speech on the life and contributions of Einstein. Mrs.K.Vijayakshmi, HOD, Physics, presided over the programme.

30 July: Pavandoor Higher Secondary School, Koshikode: Einstein Exhibition organized by BSS in the school. The principal Mr.E.K.Vijayan inaugurated the programme. Dr.M.Jothiraj was the main speaker on the occasion.

               25 August: Kuthanur High School: Einstein Exhibition inaugurated by V.Prabhakaran, President, School PTA. School HM Ms. Vijayalakshmi presided. G.S.Padmakumar inaugurated the school science club and delivered a talk on life and contributions of Einstein. K.Abdul Aziz, Secretary, Einstein year Observance Committee, Palakkad District, Inaugurated the school mathematics club. Ms.Mangalam welcomed the gathering and Ms.Sandhya proposed vote of thanks.

29 August: Victoria College, Palakkad; Einstein Exhibition under the joint auspices of BSS club, GVC and Physics association. Inaugurated by Ms. Uma, Principal of the college and presided by Dr.Surendra Babu, HOD, Physics. Dr.Rajkumar and G.S.Padmakumar spoke. P.Manikandan welcomed the gathering and Ajesh proposed vote of thanks.

23 August: Pallikkuruppu school; School HM Devassia presided. Balakrishnan, Jayadevan and Ms. Preethi spoke. G.S.Padmakumar delivered a talk on the life and philosophy of Einstein.

27 August: Desabandu HS, Thachanpara, School HM, Ramakrishna Pillai Presided. Biju Jacob and Shinoj spoke. G.S.Padmakumar spoke on the life and philosophy of Einstein.

17 October, 2005: Einstein Exhibition at Govt.College, Chittoor. Principal, K.V.Lalitha Devi inaugurated the exhibition. B.M.Musthafa, HOD, Physics presided. K.K.Chidambaran, HOD, Maths, M.Krishnakumar, College Union Chairman, K.Abdul Azees, Secretry, Einstein Year Observance Committee, Palakkad, and P.Manikandan spoke. G.S.Padmakumar delivered the keynote address. Sanoj Secretary, Physics association welcomed the gathering and Riyasudhin, Secretary, Science Forum, G.C.C offered a vote of thanks.

5 November: Einstein Exhibition at Higher Secondary School, Kannadi. Principal Sri.Ravikumar presided over the inaugural function. G.S.Padmakumar spoke on the life and philosophy of Einstein. Breakthrough Science Society Club was formed in the school in connection with the exhibition.

7December: Govt.Victoria College Palakkad: Screening of the documentary, Albert Einstein: The Philosopher Scientist” in connection with the inauguration of Physics Association. G.S.Padmakumar inaugurated the association with a talk on the life and philosophy of Einstein, M.Surendra Babu, HOD Physics, presided. Smt.B.Uma, principal was the guest in Chief. Anoop, physics association secretary and P.Manikandan, College Union Chairman also spoke.

Universal Science Club affiliated to BSS, Kalleppully.Screening of the documentary and talk on Einstein’s life and contributions. G.S.Padmakumar and K.Abdul Aziz spoke. Sathish joint secretary of the club presided and Shaju, secretary, offered a vote of thanks.

Malappuram District

21 July: University of Calicut Campus, Thenjippalam; Einstein Exhibition under the joint auspices of BSS and Dept. of Physics. Dr.B.R.S.Babu, HOD, Physics, inaugurated. G.S.Padmakumar presided over the function. Dr.Muhammed Shafi (KSSP), VP. Sadanandan (Campus Cultural Forum), Dr.I.C.Konikkara and Ms.Indu spoke. Dr.E.Sreekumaran welcomed the gathering and T.T.Vasudevan proposed the vote of thanks.

Alappuzha District

On behalf of the Alappuzha District Chapter of BSS, a talk by Dr.Soumitro Banerjee on the life and work of Einstein was held on 25th October 2004 at Brothers Tourist Home, Alappuzha. Mr.Sivankutty, District convener, BSS, presided. Dr.Kalleli Gopalakrishnan, G.S.Padmakumar, Prof.P.N.Thankachan, Smt.Santhakumari, District Education Officer, Alappuzha and Mr.E.Nazeer spoke.

16 July, 2005: District level observance committee formed with Prof.Kalleli Gopalakrishnan   (former HOD Physics, S.D.College, Alappuzha) as chairman and Dr.D.T.Zakarias (Former Director, Institute of Virology, Kerala), Prof. S.Ramanand (HOD, Physics, S.D.College, Alappuzha), and Prof.Lailamma Skaria (HOD, Physics, St.joseph’s College, Alappuaha) as Vice-Chairpersons, K.Sivankutty as convenor, E.Nazeer, K.P.Manoharan and J.Baburaj as convenors and G.Madhukumar as Treasurer. The advisory board of the committee includes Sri Murali (DDE, Alappuzha)

10, 11 August 2005: Einstein Exhibition at the S.D.College Alappuzha, under the joint auspices of Department of physics, S.D.College, Alappuzha and BSS. Inaugurated by K.G.Nair (Director, Centre for Science Society, CUSAT) the inaugural function was presided over by Prof.Krishnan Namboothiri, Principal of the College. Prof.Kalleli Gopalakrishnan, Prof.Ramanandan, G.S.Padmakumar and K.Sivankutty spoke.

9 August: ‘Vilambara Jatha’- a well decorated procession of students and science activists announcing the Einstein Exhibition-visited different colleges and schools in the town.

16 August, 2005: Einstein Exhibition at Govt.Girls H.S.S Kayamkulam, Inaugurated by Smt.Mariamma Daniel (Municipal Chairperson). Inaugural Session presided over by Smt. M.Rahseed (Principal, MSM College, Kayamkulam) and Dr.T.K.Balachandran (Former Principal, S.N.College Cherthala) were the main speakers. K.Sivankutty, Smt.K.G.Radhamani Amma (HM, BHS, Kayamkulam, A.Salam (GHSS, Kayamkulam), Muhammed Sha (NGO Union), Shoukath (MSM School) and T.P.Thomaskutty were among the speakers.

17 August, 2005: Einstein Exhibition at NRPMHS, Pullukulangara by M.Gopala Krishna Karanavor (President, Kundalloor Panchayat), E.Nazeer, Chunakkara Janardhanan Nair, P.Radhakrishnan (State President, PSTA), R.Geetha (Principal, NRPMHSS), N.Soman and S.Anil Prasad spoke.
